In London, a social-climbing hostess’s card party turns deadly when a game of Duplicate Bridge ends with two guests strangled by picture wire. The murders appear identical, but were they committed by the same hand? Inspector Hemingway faces a tangled web of ambition, deceit, and high society scandal.
When Miss Beulah Birtley, fiancée of Hemingway’s young friend Timothy Kane, becomes the prime suspect, things get personal. Beulah bought the weapon, quarreled with the victim, and was the last to see him alive. Then, another murder! Mrs. Haddington, strangled in the same spot as before. It’s a fiendishly clever case, but Hemingway never misses a trick.
Georgette Heyer was a prolific novelist known for her historical romances and detective fiction. She began her career in 1921 with The Black Moth, written for her younger brother. In 1925 she married George Ronald Rougier, who often helped shape her thriller plots. From 1932 onward, she published one romance and one mystery each year. A fiercely private author, Heyer avoided publicity, never gave interviews, and wrote only one book under a pseudonym—Stella Martin.
