All Stella Dallas wants is to rise in the world, but her rough edges and indiscretions doom her marriage to refined Stephen Dallas. Devoted to her daughter Laurel, Stella clings to dreams of gentility even as scandal and gossip shut them out of society. In the end, she makes a heartbreaking sacrifice so Laurel can have the life she never could.
The 1937 film adaptation, directed by King Vidor and produced by Sam Goldwyn, earned Oscar nominations for Barbara Stanwyck and Ann Shirley.
Olive Higgins Prouty was best known for her romance novels, Olive Higgins Prouty gained wide recognition with Stella Dallas, published around this time. The novel was adapted into a play in 1924, a radio serial, and a 1925 film, then famously remade in 1937 starring Barbara Stanwyck.
